Chapter (6)
~ Gold Mountain
When Chinese immigrants traveled to North America in the mid-1800s, many dreamed of a better life of wealth, prosperity, and security in Gold Mountain, a slang term for America. However, upon arrival, they faced discrimination and were exploited and brutalized. In my work, 金山 (Gold Mountain), I created a literal mountain of gold that represents the hope of dreams of those the Chinese community. Surrounding it is a red disk representing a pool of blood spilled from the forced labor and violence inflicted upon the immigrants.
